A few words from GoblinBoy

Hi again,

Sorry to be monopolizing this blog :) Firstly, here is a picture of Penny from the 'new game':

Edit: a second picture:

and a third:

She and Karen are the main girls, mostly, and are opposites in many ways.

Also, for those of you wondering about my future plans I just posted a fairly long comment at ExLibris' Over-Analysing AIF blog. The maincontent of this post was:

...
As for my future here - I still haven't decided. I *should* quietly fade back away, but then I shouldn't have really posted in the first place. The fact is, writing colossal games with hundreds of pictures takes a lot of time. A *lot*. And the rest of my life was suffering as a result.
...
My reimagining is trying to whittle the plot down to a point where I could write a game in months rather than years, but currently the only way I can think of doing that is by removing all the key scenes which were the reason I originally wanted to write this game
...
In the reimagining literally *none* of what I wrote before is in the current version of the plot. And the 'key scene that starts the game properly' has been relegated to one possible branch that you might do, but might not. In short, the game I think I *can* tell is very different from the one I want to. Which does not help me to get the enthusiasm to commit the next x months of my life to writing it.
...
at the moment apart from plotting I have not written a single word of a game.
...
So, I have been idly creating a few pictures of the characters that *would* be in the game if I wrote it. But I'm still thinking that I probably won't write it. But who knows, if I get the inspiration and a compact enough plot that lets me do what I wanted...

Or I could just write something entirely different. Or I could fade quietly away again. I still haven't decided.

You can skip over to his blog (it's a comment in the Make Love Not War post), but that is the gist of it.

Cheers!

  1. hi Goblinboy,
The reason i started and interest in playing AIF, is because of the School Dream Forever.
I know as programming is sometimes headache, especially if it's getting more and more complicated (myself is a programmer). Of course we all hope that you able to get back your enthusiasm in writing back AIF as this is what we had been hoping for over the past few years.
Wonder you thought about splitting the programs to multiple parts and work together with other authors like bben, palmer, another wannabe, minterlint and others ?
But no matter what your final decision is, we all wish u all the best, and hope we have another opportunity to play your game.
    Take care

  2. Heh, you just made me think about just i would love to see one last big goblinboy style mega game... Sounds awesome. But obviously if your life is suffering it's not worth it.

  3. It's nice that now we can say loud how much we will love to see another game from you.
The best would be if you find a perfect plot for your story (or another story you like), if you would be happy to simply vanish you wouldn't have posted so, and now, even if you fade another time, we can hope in a comeback if an interesting idea hit you.
In any case even if I would die to play another game from you (your games made me know this world) I don't think you have to try to write something that doesn't convince you.
There are some authors that want very much to satisfy more player possible (like Bbben, that try to put something for each taste), you, probably, like to create something interesting for you (Minterlint probably is similar, maybe more solitaire), but at the same time the quality is so high to have so much fans (if people wouldn't appreciate your game there wouldn't be a reason to release them)).
Naturally this are only my impressions, I cannot read your mind.
I want to say that, in your game, I have liked like all the things seem to have reason (even when at first seems strange) and how sometimes a "wrong " choice doesn't mean that you won't have some advantages (for example when in Tesliss you can have easier two woman if you fail to protect the formula).

PS Penny is another good picture.

PPS If you decide to vanish another time I hope you would at least think about a new release of "The Haunting of Kristen", I'm very curious to read it.

This is surely a stupid question, seen as two person sent you a copy without you writing anything, but how can I send my email address, in your blogger profile I don't see an email or a way to send you something.
What I have to do to contact you, have I to create a blogger profile ?

  5. I know you've already said it's not about the money, but I would once again suggest considering Patreon. :) There are artists/writers/smut creators that are making thousands, or tens of thousands of dollars a month on Patreon. (Fenoxo of CoC and TiTs fame currently has $17,000 a month in pledges).

It doesn't make the time commitment required to make a game any less... but you could in theory quit your day job and just make a living off of game writing. Or, if you're not willing to do that, it could at least be an excellent second source of income. That way, when you spend hours writing smut instead of say, spending time with your friends and family, you can just say that you're working hard and making money for your future!

I know the AIF community is small and niche, and you might not think there'd be enough fans to get that level of support, but SD3 really is I think the most well known AIF game out there. I've seen it played or discussed in places completely unrelated to the AIF community, so if anyone can do this, it'll be you, GB. Give it some serious consideration!

I think you're underestimating how 'niche' text-based games are. BBBen would be more comparable, and he's getting considerably less than $17,000 a month out of Patreon.

There's also the fact that once you accept money, making games becomes your job rather than your hobby, which can make it a lot less fun.

      Delete
    2. CoC and TiTs are entirely text based as well.

Again, I'm well aware of how niche the AIF community is, but it's why I mentioned specifically that SD3 is known outside of our fairly insular group. Just take a look at how many people have said the very first time they've played an AIF is because of SD3.

I mean absolutely no offense to BBBen, who's an excellent AIF author, but if GB went the Patreon route he would likely have a lot more supporters just by virtue of having a bigger potential audience.

You have a fair point about the job versus hobby, but isn't getting paid for your hobby the American Dream? Or something, I'm not actually American so I don't know. (Come to think of it neither is GoblinBoy.)

      Delete
    3. Sorry, I should have said text-parser based.

"isn't getting paid for your hobby the American Dream?"

Perhaps, but in this case it's a hobby that GB quit because it was taking up too much of his time and the rest of his life was suffering as a result. Given his statements above, I suspect he's not exactly eager to lock himself into doing that full-time, especially with the additional workload that self-promotion and interacting with pledges would entail. If you keep it as a hobby, you can do as much or as little work on it as you feel like.

      Delete
    4. Patreon is also built on the assumption of regular content updates. An AIF game like Newlife (https://www.patreon.com/splendidostrich) gets patrons by virtue of the fact that each month the game is bigger than it was the month before. All of Goblinboy's games have been more traditional text adventures, which don't really lend themselves to expansion over time.

Besides, can't he simply be blackmailed into creating more content by having people threaten to commit terrorist acts unless new games are released on a timetable approved by the community? There's no evidence that he lacks basic human decency, and that's a flaw which can be exploited to great effect.

    5. "I think you're underestimating how 'niche' text-based games are. BBBen would be more comparable, and he's getting considerably less than $17,000 a month out of Patreon."

Mmmm, Fenoxo started more than a year ago, bbben started in January. Also bbben has received all this backing without publishing a game. I'd be willing to bet that bbben will reach $1000/month easily. And all of that is without actually releasing a game proper. With the release of his next game, it is fair to assume that there will be a bump in his Patreon if the game is quality material - which is pretty much assured.

Goblinboy being even more a superstar than bbben, it's fair to assume that if he would go the Patreon way he would reach of the order of a $1000/month easily.

"There's also the fact that once you accept money, making games becomes your job rather than your hobby, which can make it a lot less fun."

I partly agree with this in the sense that accepting money forces you to meet at least some kind of loose deadline. It probably would not be a good thing if after accepting the money you said 'you know what, I'm not finishing this game'. On the other hand, I support bbben for instance and for me it feels more like recognizing hard work. I tried to write a game once and immediately realised the amount of time it would take me to do it, time that I was soon convinced that I didnt have. So, I think it's fair to donate something to people who are willing to spend the time and money to produce quality AIF.

      Delete
    6. "I'd be willing to bet that bbben will reach $1000/month easily"

And $1000 a month is still considerably less than $17000 a month. It's also considerably less than Splendid Ostrich is getting and he started less than a month before BBBen, and doesn't have anything like BBBen's track record. What he does have (as cubano mentioned) is a game that's very well suited to the Patreon model, because he can offer patrons additional benefits: regular content updates, the ability to inject their own ideas, and so on. It's also not text-parser based, so it has broader appeal.

None of which is to say that Patreon isn't very useful if you want to create something. Even getting a $100/month is obviously more helpful than getting nothing. But you're giving up some of your autonomy in return, in the sense that you're now obliged to create something and you should really allow your patrons some input into what it is. If you want to avoid that, then a simple donate button is probably the way to go.

However, in this particular instance those solutions run up against the problem that GB has said that a) he doesn't want money; and b) he's uncertain if he's going to create another game.

      Delete
    7. Right, but I think that GB wants to create another game. If he didn't he wouldn't be making all these teaser posts. He just lacks the time to do so. As it is, there's really no easy solution, there's no possible way to give him more time. He could make a smaller game or simpler game but as he said himself, that's probably going to be very different from what he was planning.

Patreon is an imperfect solution, but if GoblinBoy DOES reach that threshold where he can make a living off of just making games, then it would free up more time for him.

And if he doesn't reach it, then at the very least it still provides incentive to work on the game. I mean, on some level GoblinBoy must want to write more, or else he would just be staying hidden. And I get it, when you weigh spending time with friends and family over spending time coding and writing, friends and family wins out. I'm just saying that if coding and writing also included getting a couple hundred or thousands dollars a month, then maybe it would seem worth the time and effort.

      Delete
    8. "I think that GB wants to create another game"

You're interpreting his statements differently to me then, because while I agree that he has *some* interest in maybe making another game at some point, he pretty much says that his interest levels aren't high enough at the moment to commit the time necessary.

"if GoblinBoy DOES reach that threshold where he can make a living off of just making games"

I don't know GB's situation (eg. how much he makes in his current job, whether he has a family to support or a mortgage to pay off), but even in a best case scenario it's very doubtful he could make enough (for the reasons already mentioned) to support himself solely from that. It would also be a pretty massive change in lifestyle, which not everyone would want.

"GoblinBoy must want to write more, or else he would just be staying hidden"

Or he could just want to be part of the community again, or mentor other authors, or create graphics for other games, or whatever. It's not a binary decision.

    9. I'll join the group of people talking about what Goblinboy might be thinking in Goblinboy's thread:

      rip_cpu,

I think the main point is that Goblinboy is aware of Patreon and hasn't chosen to use it.

My guess as to why he is doing the teasers is that A) he would like to do a game but B) there are a lot of parts of game design he doesn't want to do it. I highly doubt this is a clever 'if I only had the time' marketing ploy. He might not want to take the money because taking money puts pressure on actually getting the product finished and that might take the joy out of it.

It is also possible that he is giving these 'teasers' because he enjoys talking about games.

That's just a guess though, which is what we're all doing. It's possible he is rich, doesn't care about money, or many other things. But as Goblinboy said in an earlier thread, for him it isn't about the money, so trying to say 'you'll make a lot of money' probably isn't relevant to him even though it might seem so to you (and maybe even everyone else).

    10. "And $1000 a month is still considerably less than $17000 a month."

      Oh, really?

"It's also considerably less than Splendid Ostrich is getting and he started less than a month before BBBen, and doesn't have anything like BBBen's track record"

Splendid Ostrich started in about November for what I can see. At least that's when his post fist appeared in Hongfire. bbben hadnt posted in Hongfire until yesterday. Let's see how that goes.

With respect to your other comments, I agree with most of it as I already said. It is true that using Patreon makes you responsible for producing content. On the other hand, I do not see why the preference of Patreon's model for regular updates cannot be adapted to AIF. After all, Wolfschadowe for instance is already releasing episodes.

How does Wolfschadowe fits in your hypothesis by the way? He has a mere 14 backers due to the essentially nonexistent promotion campaign but he is getting $20+/patron. Even if you remove his 100$ backer, he is still getting a remarkable $15/patron. To put this in context, Splendid Ostrich gets less than $6/patron. So, with the little statistics there is, it seems that people are willing to give more money to Wolf than to SO. This is very relevant if we are going to estimate how much the contribution is going to grow in the future.

The thing about the Patreon model that you are not considering is that all creators have a stable amount - the amount at which the monthly increase in the money pledged to them is zero. It doesnt matter how fast you get there, this depends of how good you are at campaigning, the only thing that matters in the long run is what is that amount. We don't know what that amount is for bbben but it is not necessarily accurate to judge by what people pledge now, given that it has not arrived to stability.

Bottom line is, I don't really see why AIF cannot adapt to Patreon. For instance, Wolfschadowe does it fine with episodic content, bbben is already doing so to some extent with his weekly updates, but also, after his game is finished, he could presumably do things like add some DLCs every now and then and so on.

Having attempted to write a TADS game a while ago, I know of a couple of things Goblinboy has that the community could use even if he doesnt write another game :) There is some skeleton code that he implemented in his games that could be very useful. For instance, say you exit room X and you are presented with a multiple choice of where to go instead of having to traverse the map. Or the code for presenting the player with multiple conversation choices, instead of having to guess by using "ask about X". I implemented versions of these but it would be very useful to have a package with all these things. In my case, I just didnt have time to write it.

I'm the same as the Anonymous above btw

    12. "Bottom line is, I don't really see why AIF cannot adapt to Patreon"

      I don't disagree with you.

My point was simply that the games Splendid Ostrich and Wolfschadowe are making are better suited to that kind of model. Splendid Ostrich because he can add additional gameplay on a regular basis, and Wolfschadowe because he has a roadmap of regular content updates. There's no reason why text-parser based games can't do the latter as well, but they would be less easy to make modular. Also, text-parser is considerably more niche than point-and-click.

"How does Wolfschadowe fits in your hypothesis by the way?"

He's very well known on one particular forum, so it doesn't surprise me that he was able to find a core of generous backers. The fact that his game is heavily graphical probably doesn't hurt either.

"Splendid Ostrich started in about November for what I can see"

I was referring to when their respective Patreon accounts were set up. According to his blog, Splendid Ostrich did that on December 21.

    1. I have more pictures from SD3, yes, but on the whole they are either experimental ones (early versions of Melissa and Alison) or just different angles of pictures that I used. Or pictures that were cut for reasons of taste (Miss Holloway and her garden friend...) I also have the pictures that I made so far for The Camping Trip. I was actually vaguely wondering about going back and finishing them off, but I did then *years* ago and they seem a bit amateurish now...

    2. The early versions of characters sound like they could be interesting, it'd be neat to see how their designs changed.

Which pictures of Camping Trip did you do? Just profile/descriptive pics? I've always wanted to see some of the more memorable scenes in that game illustrated.

    3. I did pictures of Becky and Melissa at the camp for each of the 3 days clothing. I did Becky's bathing scene (this was actually featured in Inside Erin back in the day...). I did when you catch Mike and Becky making out the first time. I did a few spin the bottle pictures (mostly just Becky sitting around in various states of undress). I think that was about it.

I'll have a look at what I have tomorrow and maybe post a couple of the most interesting ones from CT and character development (Alison and Melissa changed a bit, the girl from The Photoshoot had a few incarnations). There are also the pictures from the moderated Space game that someone hosted a few years ago - I made pictures for the scenes from my character (an early Kesya, who later featured in Last Horizon) and a few characters other people asked me to do. They were all available on the webiste that was made for that space game but that may have vanished now...

    1. I agree, although, I am having a slight programming problem. I did say that my next update would involve me asking for beta testers, and at the moment, I can't ask for that. I do agree though, and was thinking exactly the same thing myself.
GoblinBoy, as great as he is/was will in no way, shape, or form, put me off what I am doing, quite the opposite in fact. I do see however, how it may put others off if they feel they cannot compete. All I would say is:- Just do what you do, and believe that, no matter what, your posts, and games, are appreciated by the whole community, and your efforts will not go unnoticed, Even by the 'Big Cheese' !!!!

      Delete
    2. Call me a skeptic, but I don't think the two are at all related ;) We have plenty of droughts within the community and I don't think this one is any different.

Most of the blogs haven't been updated in some time well before this. The AIF framework apparently hit 1.0, so I imagine that is a milestone of sorts, and it wasn't updated frequently before that. Deus throws quite a bit of posts out there, but can't expect one all the time! They are often about things happening in the community, and if there isn't much going on, not a lot to report/review/comment on. And of course we have the Doc chiming in that he is indeed working hard, making his way towards a beta.

So to me it just seems par for the course. There is a bit of discussion started on the Reddit page concerning the 2015 mini comp and still some slight activity on the y! group. So I wouldn't worry too much, raza ;)

      Delete
    3. I would certainly hope that me posting a few pictures and saying that I am not working on a game would not be enough to drive the entire AIF community to a standstill! I'm sure it's just coincidence. And nobody has to worry about not beng able to compete or anything like that. I'm not competing :) Just sitting here, minding my own business. Honest.

      Cheers!

Palmer was gret in his use of pictures, like GB I found his images well integrated in the story, but it was a strange effect to not seeing anything in the sex scenes (nearly as a big teasing), but this was a limitation for using real images (that for other part many loved for using real images).

Goblinboy, You've seemed kind of hesitant about putting something like a game out there, but I was wondering why something like a comic format might be a sort of transition because there is writing and images, but less of the struggle with any sort of coding. It's clear you've got some hesitancy in taking up a "dev/leadership" role in the AIF scene again, and honestly the great thing is you don't have to! The AIF community has been seeing some pretty amazing games recently. I heartily just recommend seeing how things go. If you find you have a story you really want to tell, well, then you might either want to take up the mantle again or partner with another dev to take some of the load off. 23. Hello Goblinboy.
I want to ask yout permission to remake Camping Trip on another game engine.

I've already started and made a small version of a bunch of errors, but your permission on this issue is very important to me.

Please, contact me if you read this.

    Sincerely, Blue.

    1. I've forwarded your message on to the email address I have for GoblinBoy, in case he doesn't see this. However, I've no idea if he still checks that email or not.

In case he doesn't reply, have you considered making a game inspired by Camping Trip rather than a straight remake? Also, RPG Maker is a very different format to TADS, so the game would require major changes to keep the gameplay interesting.

    3. Thank you!

      Why remake?
Yes, this is a popular question.

Initially, I was busy with RPG maker only in the sandbox, trying different scripts and features. But it was very boring and uninteresting. Gets just sketches. Therefore, I need was a plot. And I decided to remember a small but very pleasant to me and igrkom Camping Trip. It lasts for only 3 days, 4 characters. There branching story, and a lot of dialogue and descriptions of scenes.

I decided to take this story as a basis and add / remove too complex or cumbersome in design elements having no direct effect on the main story details.

      So it all began.

Well, now I'm faced with a problem that occurs when the fans are divided into two camps. Someone is like my initiative and they want to continue, and someone hinted that it would be nice to get direct permission from the author to use his story before publish it.

I have tried to send an email that Goblinboy pointed in Readme to Camping trip. But the answer I have not yet received.

The project is not finished yet, there are a lot of errors and shortcomings, I just gloss over them mastered and slowly move through the story on the first day.

I invested a lot of time, effort and some money into this project, and I would not want to close it and keep in the back of my home computer ... I hope Goblinboy will be supportive, and he likes the idea.

      Sincerely, Blue.

    4. "I hope Goblinboy will be supportive, and he likes the idea."

To be honest, I think it would have been a better idea to get GoblinBoy's approval *before* setting up a Patreon page.

If GoblinBoy doesn't give his approval (either because or refuse or, more likely, he doesn't reply) I hope you will do the right thing and remove the game.

  24. I already did it.

On the advice of smart people, so to do not throw away what has already been done, I will write another story.

It will be similar to the original, at the beginning - yes. But it will not copy Camping trip, it will be another story. Characters will have a different past and future. Will the idea of camping on the lake four teenagers and some similar moments in the first and second days.

    Sincerely, Blue.
