2020 Minicomp Design Discussion

During the Minicomp, authors are allowed to openly discuss their games. Do you want to get feedback on your game idea? Do you need help shrinking your ideas down to fit the minicomp restrictions? Do you just want to share parts of your game with others?

Feel free to discuss things here in the comments of this post, in the #minicomp channel of the AIF Discord, or elsewhere.

If you are posting a comment anonymously, it is useful if you tag the comment with a nickname so that other people know who it is

  1. One of the hottest areas of gaming today is board games. It's so retro that it no longer involves computers. For the minicomp, I want to see if I bring some of the creative energy of board games to AIF.

I think some aspects of boardgaming like printing out maps, reading rulebooks, and rolling dice would ruin the mood. But I think other aspects of board gaming can be transferred over to AIF. Looking at some games in the nsfwcyoa subreddit, especially Fay's Path, has given me some ideas.

I really like the idea of having all the rules and content of the game hanging out for everyone to look at. I don't want all the logic of the game hidden in code. I want it all exposed, with the player even being responsible for some minimal bookkeeping.

    1. I've made some initial progress at putting the pieces together. I think I have the general framework for how it will all work. I must have spent days investigating different tools for making the character sheet. In the end, I ended up just going with Twine. Every time there was something I couldn't figure out, I could just Google it and someone else would have already worked it out.

  2. Okay, bear with me on this... Can I get a clarification on the rules, if only because I'm an insufferable pedant?

This might sound like semantics, but,

"...you can't have more than a single paragraph describing all the action until...the entire scene ends."

What defines 'a paragraph' here? I kinda hope you mean a single cut-scene of one or more paragraphs separated by line spaces or indentation, rather than an actual lone paragraph - a group of sentences in just one unbroken block of text no matter how long, and no more. Where does the dialogue go if they're paragraphs of their own? Perhaps you're happy with either interpretation, but it's an important distinction and both make for very different experiences. Better to be safe than sorry; the last thing I'd want to do is write something and find it doesn't qualify. Could we have examples?

Also, previous minicomps stipulated one sex scene in total, however presented; does this still hold or can we now have multiple 'paragraphs'/sex scenes throughout the game, so long as each one abides by the rules?

Also also, hypothetically, do you object to an author entering two games, one in each category? Asking for a friend.

    1. I find that sex scenes are one of the most time-consuming parts of an AIF game, so the intention is to force games to be small by restricting the sex in an AIF game as much as possible and preventing the creation of "sex engines" for the games. So, one paragraph only for a sex scene. If you need dialogue, you should stick them before or after the sex. Or you can use indirect speech in your paragraph. Here's how I imagined it would work:

      > north

You go north and see your sexy girlfriend standing there.

      > kiss her

      You kiss her. It's mind-blowing

      > have sex

      "Let's do it!" you say.

      "I concur."

You lead her to the bed, and you quickly undress you. You tell her how beautiful she is and she french kisses you in response. She moans as you enter her and whimpers with each thrust. You grunt as you come inside of her. As you look up, you notice your girlfriend's stepsister in the doorway. She disrobes and asks to join in, and you instantly become hard again. And the same paragraph continues as you do both sisters. You hear a shout from the doorway again. Why do you keep forgetting to close the door? You look up and your heart stops when you see the step-sister's boyfriend there. But it turns out he's into it, and the paragraph continues describing the long orgy that ensues.

The four of your sit-up in bed afterwards, exhausted, and smoking cigarettes.

There is no limit to the number of sex scenes for either minicomp track.

An author can enter as many games as they want to whatever tracks they want. You should tell your friend not to overstretch themselves, but if they're about to explode with masturbatory energy from being indoors for several months and need that release, then that's fine. Of course, it is not ok to create multiple entries as a way to circumvent the rules with a full game as a Minicomp Romp entry and then a long extended sex scene for that game as a Microcomp entry.

    2. Okay, I understand, now that we're on the same page. It's fine now I can visualize what you mean. I got the rationale, just not the finer linguistic details. All good now.

Remaining hypothetically, such two games would indeed by separate and unrelated. Should my friend have enough time once their microcomp entry is signed off, then perhaps. Until then, one game gets all the focus. There's nothing stopping them from finishing it off at a later date and releasing it anyway.

      Thanks for the response.

  3. Some people have their minicomp entries in playable form, and they're looking for beta testers. On the AIF Discord, Stochastic has a minicomp game with a neat mind control mechanic and is looking for beta testers to help playtest it. If you're interested in trying a new game and helping out, go to the Discord and contact Stochastic.
