Working Man by Ice

Working Man is an AIF game I’ve been working on for some time now. I hope you enjoy it. The game is built using Adrift 5.0 (Windows executable) and is 100% free.

You can download version 1.01 from either:

Game Info

In this game, you take the role of a normal husband with a lovely wife and daughter. Each weekday you work your ass off at the office before returning home late in the evening. Today’s work day being over, you have left the office and driven back home. This is where the game starts. The game has multiples endings and include adultery (no rape or incest). The game has been tested, but probably still contains bugs/typos.

Important message for everyone having issues with disappearing images & problem after entering the "code": After some testing, I've come to the conclusion that the issue occurs when you COPY/PASTE text into the Adrift Player. Somehow Adrift Runner doesn't like it. It has nothing to do with the game itself. The quick fix is : Don't copy/paste text in the Runner, type it manually. If it occurs for you, save your game, close the runner, open it again and restore your game.

    1. Well I played it :)

Spoilers below for theose who haven't played turn back?

Couldn't figure out half the puzzles or conversation topics and in the end managed to get the worst ending + the strip club one. I figured out when I found the condoms in the minivan that the wife was probably cheating but I couldn't figure out how to use that either lol. It was after beating the game that I only realized that boyfriend was never a topic I had broached with stephanie and still that led nowhere for me. 15 locations that I have never been or just not found reason to go to lol.

I got very stumped and finding items which I couldn't talk about with the people involved wasn't helping unfortunately. The help score just illustrated how badly I did 25's across the board except the daughter but the daughter was useless to me due to the fact that spending time with her seemed pointless. unless it gave me a passive score with the wife >_> I should check that probably doesn't though.

I liked the game I just couldn't ask or do the right things most of the time lol

    2. It takes a bit of digging and there are some oddities to it, but if you spend some more time with things you might be able to build on what you learn. Worst case you can look up some walkthroughs - I think there is one on the Blue Lagoon website as well as AIF Sans Mystery.

Of course you can always ask some specific questions on some things if you don't want to spoil the entire thing in one go ;) I found a fair bit myself, but admittedly would have never found the first secret phrase clue and some of the smaller things are fairly difficult to figure out without some luck or good old fashioned trying certain stuff over and over each day until something triggers.

  2. Ice, I think the first comment we should all make is “Thanks!” for taking a lot of time to make a complex and interesting game. I am working on my first Adrift game at the moment and I take my hat off to you for the effort you have put into Working Man.

I will continue to enjoy playing it over coming days. Have found a couple of glitches already – do you have a location where we can report these so that you can do some debugging?

The style of your graphics is very reminiscent of Goblin boy – what software are you using for the pix?

    Thanks again!

  5. Possible bug. If you stop by the bookstore while on the drive home with Stephanie, buy her the book and give it to her in the car, on the night your wife is out late Stephanie will have it with her and mention "practice" with you that never happened, but there does not seem any way to progress the scene and eventually she goes home unhappy.

    1. What day are you giving the book to Stephanie? There should have been 'practice' on Friday, which is probably why the scene isn't progressing.

    2. I think It's too late to give the book, she would want to "practice", but you haven't time, buy the book before coming home.

  7. I posted a my opinion at ExLibris' site but, in a nutshell:

I liked it. The pictures were good (if a little rough around the edges, especially when it came to facial features) and I loved the mechanics.

But, and here I agree with ExLibris, the dialogues and descriptions weren't quite there and, to me, the sex scenes felt lifeless and repetetive (even as I encountered them for the first time).

For the first game, it's ambitious, large and pretty damn well executed. There's a lot of potential here. I'm not saying "imitate GoblinBoy's writing style and you're fine" but I recommend that you play, for example, Camping Trip and examine closely how those dialogues, sex scenes and descriptions are different from yours. You might find that spark that's been missing here and that may be your key to greatness.

  8. First of all, I want to say a big thank you for using Adrift 5 for this game. I'm trying to get to grips with it for a long-term AIF project of my own, and it's really great to be able to see another example of good AIF written in this. So thanks!

As for comments about the game, I pretty much agree with the previous poster. The images are good but a bit rough. Nothing wrong with that, it's the sort of thing that'll get better with practice, and they're very good for a first attempt. What did you use to make them?
My real criticism is, as others have said, the writing. It's not bad but it's also not good, and it doesn't meet the standard the other aspects had led me to expect. On a technical level grammar, punctuation, and spelling mistakes really detract from a piece of writing. The content itself feels flat, an especially big problem in the sex scenes which should really be the highlight.

All in all, though, I think it's a good game. Even more so because it's a first attempt, and I'm sure as you get more experience things will get even better. It has a commendably large sense of scale with plenty of options to pursue, and you carried out the project consistently throughout. So congratulations on a good game, and I look forward to seeing more from you in the future!
